Style Guide with Lindsay Ellingson
Mom, Model, and Co-Founder of Wander Beauty

As a working mom of two, Lindsay Ellingson knows how important it is to take care of her own needs in order to show up as the best version of herself. Between her role as Creative Director and raising two boys, Lindsay’s days are busier than ever, but she says there’s “even more love and fun in our home.”

Lindsay takes us through her journey to motherhood, how her life has changed since welcoming her boys, and how she still manages to make time for herself through it all.

Being an always-on-the-go mom, model, and co-founder, how does that shape your daily wardrobe? My days are nonstop, so I love pieces that are elevated yet comfortable enough to wear all day. The essentials for me are a pair of high waisted straight leg jeans, oversized collared shirts, and slip-on mules or loafers. I feel put together, chic, and comfortable. On days that I don’t have time for a full face of makeup, my trick is to wear a pair of eye glasses (I like one’s with blue light protection) with a little lip oil and full brows.

What does an average day in your world look like? My day starts at 5:45am. I make myself a cup of coffee, pump, play a guided meditation, and then make my to-do list for the day before my boys wake up – this extra time to myself is a game changer for me. Once my boys are up, it’s like a whirlwind and my multitasking skills kick in. I make breakfast for Carter and feed Roen, and then quickly get ready for work. Once I arrive at the Wander Beauty office, my schedule is pretty back-to-back, consisting of team meetings, product development, and content shoots, which are my favorite. I’ve always loved my role as Creative Director and the process of art directing, creating mood boards, and producing content for our product launches. You can typically find me in the Wander creative studio photographing everything from models to macro texture shots. I usually grab a quick salad from Sweetgreen in between meetings. My day wraps at around 5pm and I hop on the ferry to get home. In the summer, I love riding on the top deck. The fresh air and sunset makes for a nice little break in my day. Once I’m home, I make sure and give my boys my undivided attention. I love hearing about Carter’s day and the new words or skills he learned. They grow up so fast at this age! To put the boys down, my husband, Sean, and I divide and conquer, but always come together as a family to say what we are grateful for. Once the boys are tucked in, Sean and I unwind with dinner and our favorite show. Just before bed, I wash my face, apply moisturizer, a botanical serum, and it’s lights out at 9:30pm

How has your personal style evolved or remained consistent over time? I’m from California, so I’ve always gravitated towards a laid back, more casual style. I think over the years, especially living in New York and working with so many incredible fashion designers, I’ve learned how to elevate my looks with the right pieces or accessories for a more fashion-forward occasion. But deep down, I’m most comfortable in a pair of jeans and simple crewneck.

As a caretaker, it’s so important to take time to care for yourself. Are there any daily rituals or routines you swear by? This is so true! As a mom, I have learned how important it is to also take care of my own needs so that I can show up as the best version of myself for my boys. For me, it’s as easy as staying hydrated throughout the day (I always have a huge cup of water by my side), listening to a podcast during feedings, taking a Pilates class or doing a body scrub in the shower. Most importantly for me though is sleep. I’m in bed most nights by 9:30pm so that I can rest and recharge for my two under two.

How has the world changed for your family since welcoming your second son? With two boys, we have less downtime but there’s even more love and fun in our home. I love seeing my boys interact. When we brought Roen home from the hospital, Carter wanted to hug him and hold him right away which was such a relief. For me, having a sibling is like having a best friend for life and we are so grateful we’re able to give that to them.

Can you tell us about your journey to motherhood? In all honesty, it’s been a very long, at times painful, yet incredibly rewarding journey. I put off having children for years so that I could focus on my modeling career. When I was ready to start trying, I did some fertility testing that revealed I had a septate uterus and also low AMH levels, so I was worried having children wouldn’t be possible. After a successful surgery and healing, I was ready to start our family. My first pregnancy happened surprisingly quickly. Unfortunately however, that pregnancy ended in a late term loss which was devastating, and the most difficult circumstance I’ve ever had to endure. I took a few months to recenter and emotionally heal through meditation, and was overjoyed when I got pregnant with Carter. When Carter was 10 months old, we found out we were pregnant with Roen, our little surprise baby. I’m so incredibly grateful for both of them.

What do you say to women who are currently facing or have faced difficulties throughout their journey? My heart goes out to all women who are facing difficulties on their journey to motherhood. Through the ups and downs, I encourage women to lean on loved ones, family, and friends. It may feel distant at times, but you will find an inner strength you never knew you had to get you through.

Can you tell us about mothers in your life that have inspired you? Having children has made me appreciate my mom even more. When I gave birth to Roen in December, she flew to New York to help me for a month. She’s been a rock for me during the most difficult times in my life, has sacrificed so much for us, and has never complained. I hope to be like that for my boys.

The best advice you’ve ever received? Anything and everything from A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. One of my favorite quotes is “acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.” For me, spiritual and mental health is a constant work-in-progress and this is a book that I like to revisit time after time.
